I put my fingers on the heart rate monitors on the elliptical trainer at the gym...by the time I go on it to cool down, my heart is usually racing because I%26#039;ve just finished an intense weight lifting workout, and then I%26#039;m running on the elliptical. So anyway, they have a little chart on the machine, for 60% and 80% target heart rates for your age group. I%26#039;m 21 and my 80% target intensity heart rate was listed as 160...but my heart rate is usually around 190 on the machine. Is that too high? My resting heart rate is around 60-65, and my blood pressure is around 135/70.
Is it OK to be above the 80% intensity cardio heart rate?
yes, it is too high, it may actually cause damage
your heart is like the rest of your body parts, it will eventually lose its function as you grow older; if you overuse it now, it won%26#039;t be able to function well later on in life
Is it OK to be above the 80% intensity cardio heart rate?
It%26#039;s perfectly fine. The higher above your target heart rate, the more calories you%26#039;ll burn AFTER you stop working out. Unless you got a heart condition, you should have no problem with this. In fact, it%26#039;s even better for you than regular slow boring cardio. That has barely any benefits. So stick to what you%26#039;re doing. It%26#039;s good. Don%26#039;t fall for that %26quot;you need to be in this heart rate zone%26quot; stuff.

i had asked a similar question earlier, have a high heart rate on the treadmill and elliptical. 190 is not OK!!! u should never over-work your heart or it could cause a shock.
220 - 21 (age) = 199 this is ur max heart rate and u should never go near or over it. u should take some rest after heavy weights and then start the elliptical, with a low or moderate intensity.
have u just started ur workouts recently? mine was 176 on the treadmill just doing the walking, but after 2 weeks of exercise ive come down to 160.

You really cannot rely totally on the accuracy of those readouts on the machines. It%26#039;s important that as you work out, you listen to your body. If you ever feel like you are working too hard, you probably are. Your focus should be on working as hard as you can.
