why not?
Do we really need heart rate monitors for exercise??
No, but to optimize your workout it does help. (controlling the % of maximum hearth rate so that you can sustain a certain amount of exercise at that peak moment and sustain that %) It%26#039;s similar to running, you can run without anything. (hopefully shoes at least but pants would probably bring about less screams on the trail) However you could also bring a pedometer (measuring the distance that you went). Knowing the distance you go will enable you to progressively make your work-out harder. If you don%26#039;t have one how will you know the distance of your run? Time? Well that can give you a little idea but changing your speed will affect time as well.

heart rate monitors bother some people. but people like my father who suffered a massive heart attack and required a quad bypass...heart monitors during exercises are crucial.
Do we really need heart rate monitors for exercise??
No, you just need a watch with a second hand and the ability to count and multiply in your head. For distance, drive over your course and get the odometer readings - use your trip meter so you can start from zero, and it will give you tenths of a mile (or km) also. If you can%26#039;t drive your course, you could use a map, or a pedometer. (See if you can borrow someone else%26#039;s so you don%26#039;t have to buy one.)
