Do heart rate monitors measure extra calories burned - not part of your Basil metabolic rate?

When I wear a heart rate monitor all day long and it tells the amount of calories burned, are those calories that i burn on top of my BMR? I thought that BMR is if you were laying in bed with no activity what so ever - just to keep you alive. So the calories burned while excercising and walking around during the day are calories on top of my BMR? i need help?!

Do heart rate monitors measure extra calories burned - not part of your Basil metabolic rate?

Yes, that is correct. Your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is how many calories your body burns just to keep your heart pumping, your lungs breathing, etc.

However I%26#039;ve never heard of wearing a heart rate monitor constantly, I believe they are designed to be used just during aerobic exercise to help you keep within your Target Heart Rate range. If your monitor does have a calorie counting feature on it, if you wear it all day it will be difficult to say how much of what it is counting is your BMR and how much is going to whatever activity you are doing, as your body is performing both at the same time and the monitor won%26#039;t be able to differentiate.

I would recommend going to www.selfdietclub.com, it is a free service provided by Self Magazine and you can browse through hundreds of activities and exercises to find out how many calories you%26#039;re burning for each. You%26#039;ll also be able to keep a running total of how many calories you%26#039;re taking in.

Good luck!
